Fryer, John b. August 15, 1753 d. May 26, 1817 British Naval Officer. Sailing Master on the HMS Bounty, second-in-command to William Bligh. In his account of the mutiny on the Bounty on April 28, 1789, Bligh characterized Fryer as an incompetent troublemaker and this view has been accepted by many historians. In fact he was a highly competent and loyal officer, his one failing on the Bounty voyage being that he refused to act as Bligh's yes-man.
