Smith, Henry b. 1825 d. August 18, 1862 Indian Mutiny Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Surry England, he served as a Lance Corporal in the 52nd Oxfordshire Regiment of Foot, British Army. During an assault on the Chaundee Chouck, at Delhi, India, September 14, 1857, Lance-Corporal Smith carried away a wounded comrade under a heavy musketry and grape fire. For gallantry in the face of the enemy, he was awarded the Victoria Cross and promoted Sergeant on September 21, 1857. He died at age 37 in Gwalior, British India.
