Born at Fritton, in Norfolk, he joined the 9th Lancers (The Queen's Royal) and reached the rank of Lance-Corporal. He was educated at Sandhurst, and by the age of 16, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant. In 1855 he served in the Crimean War.
