Born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, he represented his country at the 1956 Summer Olympics in Melbourne, Australia and won a bronze medal while fighting out of the Flyweight Division. He was recognized as the World Bantamweight Champion by the European Boxing Union, when he defeated France's Alphonse Halimi in 1961.
