Cardoso Pires, José b. October 2, 1925 d. October 26, 1998 Portuguese Writer and Essayist. He was born in Sao Joao do Peso and died in Lisbon. He fought against the dictatorship in his country, and during the 1960s, he was forced into exile. As a writer, he is best remembered for his books "Balada da Praia dos Caes" (Ballad of Dog's Beach), "Imperatores, Almirantes e Vampiros," "A Cavalo no Diabo," "Os Caminheiros e Outros Contos," "O Anjo Ancorado," "O Render dos Heróis," "Dinossauro Excelentíssimo" and "Alexandra Alpha." Pintasilgo, Maria De Lurdes b. January 18, 1930 d. July 10, 2004 Portuguese Prime Minister. Pintasilgo was the first woman to serve as the Prime Minister of Portugal. Pintasilgo served in that post from August 1, 1979 to January 3, 1980. She also served as Portugal's Ambassador to the United Nations's Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). In 1986 Pintasilgo also became the first Portuguese woman to run for President of that country, but she lost. Pintasilgo passed away in July 2004 in Lisbon, Portugal, at the age of 74.
