Born Francis David Millett Brown in Bhagalpur, India, he served as a 1st Lieutenant in the 1st Bengal European Fusiliers. At Narnoul, India on November 16, 1857, 1st Lieutenant Brown at the imminent risk of his own life, rushed to the assistance of a wounded soldier of the 1st Bengal European Fusiliers.
