Irish Brigade Monument In four years of fighting in the American Civil War, the Irish Brigade lost over 4,000 men killed, wounded and missing. At the Battle of Antietam, the four regiments then comprising the brigade (63rd NY, 69th NY, 88th NY, 29th Mass) lost a total of 422 wounded and 113 killed. Meagher, Thomas Francis [memorial] b. August 3, 1823 d. July 1, 1867 Civil War Union Brigadier General. He is most famous for commanding the "Irish Brigade". General Meagher was born in Waterford, Ireland. He was active in the Irish Independence movement and had to come to America to escape British Authorities. During the Civil War, he organized the famous "Irish Brigade" from Irish immigrants in New York.
