In May 1940, he enlisted in the 2nd/13th Australian Infantry Battalion which arrived in the Middle East in November 1940. Newton, William Ellis b. June 8, 1919 d. March 29, 1943 World War II Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Flight Lieutenant in the 22nd Squadron, Royal Australian Air Force. Leading an air attack at Salamauoa, New Guinea, March 16, 1943, Flight Lieutenant Newton flew through heavy enemy fire and was hit repeatedly.
