Barbour Jr., John Strode b. December 29, 1820 d. May 14, 1892 Congressman and Senator from Virginia. Born into a distinguished family that was prominent in Virginia politics, he entered as a democrat for the position of delegate to the legislature and won against a strong Whig opposition. He held the position from 1847 until 1851. He then went on to hold the position of president of the Orange & Alexandria Railroad Company for thirty-three years until he was nominated for Congress without his knowledge.
