Byrne, John b. September, 1832 d. July 10, 1879 Crimean War Victoria Cross Medal Recipient. He served as a Private in the 68th Regiment, Durham Light Infantry. On November 5, 1854, during the Battle of Inkerman, Crimea, when the regiment was ordered to retire, Private Byrne went back at the risk of his own life and brought in a wounded soldier under enemy fire. Again on May 11, 1955, Private Byrne in defending his position, engaged in a hand-to-hand combat with one of the enemy, killed the antagonist and captured his arms.
