Brendan, Saint b. 484 d. 577 Roman Catholica Saint, Explorer. Abbot and traveller, traditionally the founder of the monastery of Clonfert in County Galway (561), and other monasteries in Ireland and Scotland. The Latin Navigation of St Brendan (c.1050) recounts his legendary voyage to a land of saints far to the west and north, possibly the Hebrides and the Northern Isles, or even Iceland.
