Gillett, James Norris b. September 20, 1860 d. April 20, 1937 US Congressman, 22nd Governor of California (1907 to 1911). Raised in Sparta, Wisconsin, Gillett studied law on his own and was admitted to the bar in 1881. He was an attorney in the Montana and Washington Territories before settling in Eureka, Humboldt County, California in 1884. From 1889 to 1895 he was Eureka's City Attorney, and was a member of the State Senate from 1897 to 1900. Knowland, Joseph Russell b. August 5, 1873 d. February 1, 1966 US Congressman. Elected to represent California in the United States House of Representatives, serving from 1904 to 1915. Also served as a Member of the California State Assembly from 1898 to 1902, and Member of the California State Senate from 1902 to 1904. Lawrence, Ernest Orlando b. August 8, 1901 d. August 27, 1958 Physicist who first demonstrated his invention, the cyclotron (atom smasher), in 1930; it accelerated protons. The cyclotron later produced radioisotopes for medical use. He was at university of California from 1928-58 and in 1936 became director of its Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley, later named for him. He won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1939. During WWII, he and others developed plutonium sources for the atomic bomb.
