Born in Vermont, he played Major League baseball for ten seasons as a right handed starting pitcher for the New York Yankees and the Cincinnati Reds. Nicknamed "Pick" and the "Vermont Schoolteacher" by his teammates, he was versatile as an athlete in several sports including being a member of Vermont's state championship football team in 1904 before deciding to play baseball exclusively.
