Rutkiewicz, Wanda b. February 2, 1943 d. May, 1992 Adventurer. Born Wanda Blaszkiewicz in Lithuania, she was considered by many to be the best female mountain climber in the world. She was the third woman to climb Mt. Everest (the first western woman to do so) and the first woman to climb K2. She climbed 8 peaks over 8000 meters. On the night of May 12, 1992, while attempting to climb Kangchenjunga in Nepal, she decided to bivuoac less than 300 meters from the top of the mountain. She was never seen again.
