After graduating law school in 1860 he enlisted in the Union Army serving for Delaware. After the war, he again served in the military in California, Washington and Alaska. Withycombe, James b. March 21, 1854 d. March 3, 1919 Oregon Governor He immegrated to the United States in 1871, when his parents settled ona farm near Hillsboro, Oregon. He became a successful scientific farmer, and in 1898 was recruited by Oregon Agricultural College (now Oregon State University) to teach farmers. Withycombe served as Oregon State Governor from 1915 - 1918. He won re-election but died two months into his second term.
