Davis, Samuel b. October 6, 1842 d. November 27, 1863 Confederate soldier Sam Davis was captured behind enemy lines while acting as a courier. He refused to reveal the other members of his unit, or their sources of intelligence, and was hanged as a spy. His steadfast loyalty to his comrades, and his manly bearing during his trial and execution, earned him the respect of friends and enemies alike, and he became a martyr for the Confederate cause.
