Cartwright Jr., Rev. Peter b. September 1, 1785 d. September 25, 1872 Pioneer Methodist Preacher, Politician. Son of Peter, Sr., a Revolutionary War soldier. Began preaching in 1803 and was regularly received into the ministry of the Methodist Episcopal Church when only 18 years old. Moving to Illinois because against slavery, in 1828 was elected to the Illinois Legislature and again in 1832. A Democrat all his live he was an uncomprising antagonist of slavery.
