  Civil War Union Brigadier General. Harvard University graduate, mustered as Major of the 18th Mass. Infantry on Aug. 24, 1861. Promoted to Lt. Col. on Aug. 25, 1862. Saw action with the 18th Mass. during the Peninsula Campaign to the Wilderness Campaign. Wounded in the head at the Wilderness. Commissioned Brigadier General of U.S. Volunteers on May 12, 1864.
