Gilbert, William Augustus b. January 25, 1815 d. May 25, 1875 US Congressman. Elected as an Opposition Party candidate to represent New York's 23rd District in the Thirty-fourth Congress, he served from 1855 to 1857. The Connecticut-born Gilbert was raised in Champion, New York, was admitted to the bar in 1843 and settled as a practicing Attorney in Adams, Jefferson County. In 1851 and 1852 he was a member of the State Assembly.
