Ferguson, Fenner b. April 25, 1814 d. October 11, 1859 US Congressman. He attended school in Nassau, studied law, and began practicing in Albany in 1840. In 1846 he moved to Albion, Michigan, where he served as a judge, district attorney, and member of the State House of Representatives. In 1854 he was appointed Chief Justice of Nebraska Territory and was responsible for organizing the new territory's first courts. Ong-pa-ton-ga, Big Elk b. 1770 d. 1846 Native American Chief. He was known as Ong-pa-ton-ga to the Omaha Tribe. As a youngster, the Pawnee Tribe was the enemy of the Omaha people, and Big Elk earned a reputation as a warrior fighting skirmishes with them. Within his own tribe he was known for his courage in battle and for his fairness in making decisions. When Chief Washinggusaba (Black Bird), who was known as a tyrant by the Omaha people, died in 1800, Big Elk was chosen as the new principal chief.
