The Paris News, Sunday, December 27, 1998, page 8A: Lester Mullens, 85 a longtime Paris resident, died Thursday, December 24, 1998. Funeral services will be at 2 p m Monday, December 28 in the chapel of Fry & Gibbs Funeral Home with the Rev. J T Shipman and the Rev Paul Appleby officiating. Burial will be in Long Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 3-5 p m Sunday at the funeral home. Mr. Mullens was born Feb 18, 1913 to Milton L and Nola Love Mullens in Lamar County. A graduate of East Texas State Teacher's College, he attended Lamar County schools, Paris High School and Paris Jr. College. Mr. Mullens taught in Lamar County schools, coming to Paris High in 1942, where he retired in 1975. Prior to his retirement, he was named Teacher of the Year. He joined the Navy to serve his country during WW2, serving in the Phillipines. Devoted to the First Baptist Church, he was a member of the A B White Men's Sunday School Class. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Texas Ex-Teachers, RSVP, continuing his work with people. Surviving are his wife of 63 years, Louise Smith Mullens, a daughter Pat Mullens Vanderpool and husband Ralph of Dallas, one son Smith Mullens and wife Donna of Castor, LA, a grandson, Brian Mullens and wife Lorie of Castor, LA, four granddaughters, Lynn Musick and husband Steve of Shreveport, LA, and Beverly Tice and husband Troy of Lincoln, NB, two sisters, Opal Larsen of Montogomery, AL, and Joy Conder and husband Lowell of Marshall and many devoted nephews and nieces. he also leaves many friends and students whose lives he touched. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association, the Gideons or a favorite charity. Paulbearers will be Jim Groom, Dick House, Loyd Mathews, Joe Iglehart, J T Davis, John Norton, Richard Babb and Jack Edwards. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the A B White Sunday School Class and Aerofit Water Walkers.
