DEATH OF LEWIS BOUTON
Had Been Ill for Five Years as
Result of Paralysis
Lewis Bouton died at his home, 51 Union-st. at 3:30 o'clock yesterday after an illness from paralysis extending over a period of nearly five years, aged 80 years.

Mr. Bouton, who was a son of the late Nathan Bouton, was born in Virgil, May 26, 1838, and with the exception of three years spent in California, lived there until February, 1865, when he came to Cortland and entered the law office of Ballard & Ward as a student. He was admitted to practice in 1868, and the following year entered into partnership, with Riley Champlin, which was maintained until four years ago, when it was found that Mr. Bouton's helath would not permit of his continuing in active practice. He served one term as district attorney for Cortland county and was for many years justice of the peace for the town of Cortlandville. He had been a trustee of the Cortland Savings bank since 1890 and its attorney since 1892. He had been a member of the First Presbyterian church since Nov. 5, 1870, and had been an elder in the church since October, 1880.

On Sept. 8, 1870, Mr. Bouton was united in marriage with Miss Emily A. Lamont of Virgil, who died Sept. 28, He leaves a son, Dean Archibald L. Bouton of New York university, a brother, Edmund Bouton of Wichita, Kan. and a sister, Mrs. Emma Drew of Topeka, Kan.

Mr. Bouton was of a particularly genial and sunny disposition and always had that fine sense of humor which smooths out and relieves so many of the rough spots in life. He was greatly interested in everything that pertained to the welfare of his community and will be missed in many ways.

Because of the long period of activity connected with the First Presbyterian church and because of the loyal and hearty support which he had always given to everything connected with his church life it was felt that it would be especially fitting that the funeral be held at the chapel of the church, and, though the mayor, acting under the advice and direction of the board of health, has directed that no public gatherings be held during this period of general illness, the mayor has thought that, since no children would be likely to be in attendance and only personal friends of the deceased and because the chapel is large and well ventilated, it would be no violation of the spirit of the order to permit this funeral. The hour has therefore been fixed for the chapel at 5 o'clock on Friday afternoon, where the funeral of Mrs. Bouton, his long life partner, was held only twelve days before.
