MRS. OSCAR TSCHIRKY DIES OF HEART AILMENT AT RESIDENCE IN NEW PALTZ
Mrs. Sophie B. Tschirky, wife of Oscar Tschirky, widely known as Oscar of the Waldorf, host of the hotel, died in her sleep early yesterday morning of a heart ailment at her home in New Paltz.
She was in her seventy-fourth year. Mrs. Tschirky suffered a heart attack the day after Christmas, but was believed to be recovering.
Her husband was at the Waldorf when she died. At the bedside were her son, August Tschirky, and her daughter, Mrs. Ira Zimmerman.
Mrs. Tschirky was born Sophie Bertisch, in Hasloch, Germany on June 5, 1865. Upon the death of her parents she came to this country at the age of sixteen with her sister. It was not long after she arrived here that she met Oscar Tschirky who had come here at the age of fifteen from Switzerland.
They were married on Sept. 18, 1887, when he was still working on his first job in this country at the old Hoffman House in New York.
After he had been at the Old Waldorf Astoria for 31 years, the couple took what they described as their wedding trip. In Europe they were entertained by the late King and Queen of the Belgians and other notables.
In January, 1929, Mrs. Tschirky, on the arm of her husband, led the grand march of employees of the old Waldorf, in the last staff party given in the hostelry before it was demolished.
On Oscar's seventieth birthday he said: "When I'm at home, either at the farm or in our hotel apartment, Mrs. Tschirky is such a good manager the meals would be a failure if I interfered."
Their fiftieth wedding anniversary celebration was in the form of a dinner given in the grand ballroom of the Waldorf Astoria, when Mrs. Tschirky was honored with her husband by more that 1,100 guests, including leaders from all walks of life.
Surviving, besides her husband and the children who were with her when she died is another son, Leopold Tschirky.
Funeral services will be held at the New Paltz home on Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Rev. Gerret J. Wullschleger officiating, with interment in the New Paltz Rural Cemetery.
