DEATH OF CAPTAIN J.J. CROWLEY (from original obituary)
Sunday morning at six o'clock died, after a brief illness, Captain John J. Crowley, native of Mobile, aged 46 years. The deceased was but a youth when the war broke out, but he volunteered at once in the Washington Light Infantry, afterwards a portion of the Third Alabama Regiment, and served faithfully and well throughout the struggle. After the war he continued his connection with the Light Infantry and was elected its captain. He served the company as its commander until the command was dissolved about three years ago.
After his return home from the war he was for a time engaged in on the river in the capacity of purser. He then secured a position in the freight department of the Mobile and Ohio road, and later, during the last term of mayor R.B. Owen, was elected by the Police Board chief of police to succeed Mayor W.H. Williamson. He was an active fireman for many years, a member and at one time president of Washington Steam Fire Company No. 8, and at the time of death, was vice-president of the Mobile Fire Department Association. He was also an honorary member of the Gulf City Guards. He married Mary J. Kelly, who with three daughters and one son survive him.
Captain Crowley was a man of many excellent traits of character, courteous at all times, unassuming and popular with all his friends. He was an efficient worker in the ranks of the Democracy and performed faithfully of the duties of a citizen.
The regimental flag at the armory hung at half-mast yesterday, and during the afternoon the bell in the tower was solemnly tolled. The funeral took place from the residence on Warren street, near Government yesterday afternoon, and was largely attended. A short funeral service was said at the residence by Rev. John A. Downey, S.J., of St. Joseph's Church, after which the large cortege took up the march to the Cathedral headed by the fire department brass band playing a solemn dirge. After the band came a large delegation of the Gulf City Guards in uniform, and behind these a platoon of police under command of Sergeant John McGuire. Then came the officers of the Fire Department Association in carriages, Washington Steam Fire Company No. 8, in a body and in uniform and a number of firemen from the different fire companies of the department. Then the hearse with floral offerings, among them a fine floral piece from the police about five feet high representing a pillow inscribed "Our Friend," and above this an anchor with the initials "J.J.C." above which was a white dove. Another one of the same order was inscribed "Our ex-President, No. 8." Another floral gift contained the motto "C.D.R.S" There were other beautiful gifts inscribed "Our Papa," and "Brother," a floral star, and a pillow inscribed "Rest," the gift of friends and relatives.
After the services were concluded at the Cathedral the funeral procession moved to Magnolia Cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest.
