Born in Horst and baptized as Eduard, he would always be known in America as Edward. He married Anna on 10 Nov 1895 at Stellingen, Hamburg, Germany. They had four children, one of which did not survive, before they emigrated; he in 1906, Anna and three children in 1907. One more child was born to them in America.

He first worked as a laborer in a felt mill in Fairfield Township of Middleville Village, Herkimer County, New York. Years later, he and his eldest daughter worked together as laborers in a shoe shop in the town of Oppenheim, Fulton County, New York. Over the years, he saved his money and purchased his own farm in Oppenheim where he worked and lived the remainder of his life.
