Jan.18,1966-Services for B.McCollum of Greasy Corner were held Tuesday afternoon at the Baptist Church of Hughes, with the Rev.Billy G.Pierce and the Rev.W.D.Wallace officiating. Burial followed at Crittenden Memorial Park at Marion with Stevens Funeral Home in charge. Mr.McCollum, who was 79, passed away at his home at Greasey Corner, near Hughes, Sunday night. He had been in failing health since last October and had spent much of the time since then in the hospital. Born on April 22, 1886, in Tippah Co., Miss., the son of Debbie Mathis and W.T.McCollum. (have not found any information to support W.T. being the father believe the Father to be A.Y. McCollum. I have found records that A.Y. had a son name W.T. by first wife Mary Wiley). He moved near Hughes in 1919 and spent the remainder of his life there. He was a merchant and farmer. Mr.McCollum is credited with being the first farmer in this area to irrigate cotton crops. He was a member of the Methodist church. Mr.McCollum frequently wrote letters to newspapers, expressing his opinions on current conditions. He also wrote to a number of officials, including the late Sir Winston Churchill, and to govenors of Arkansas. He had been a Justice of the Peace for over 25 years in St.Francis County, and had served one term in the Arkansas House of Representatives. He leaves five sons, Halbert, Francis, Billy, B.Jr., all of Greasy Corner, and Joe of Mexico City, Mexico (one son is not listed he was murder as a child...drowned: Julius McCollum body never recovered no headstone for him); and one daughter, Mrs.Charlotte Robertson of West Memphis; 15 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren. He also leaves 4 brothers, Ransom McCollum of Colt; J.Y.McCollum of Hickory Fla., Miss., Johnny and Clarence (my grandfather); and one sister, Mrs.Louanna Lance McCollum, (there are 2 more sisters not mentioned Dosia (becomes Dorothy) and Florence) both of Memphis and of St.Louis.
