Born about 1821 in Ohio.

A farmer by trade, he was apparently an adventurous chap: he was recorded in his first four decades of adulthood in four different states!

He married Mary Jane McDonald in Kosciusko County, Indiana on 23 May 1844 - when he was about 23 and she sixteen or seventeen. They started their family there, recorded with three children in the census of 17 Sep 1850.

Having moved to Iowa about 1855, they had five children with them in the 1856 state census of Center Township, Decatur County, Iowa. They soon settled in nearby Ross Township, Iowa where Samuel had bought land (and the family was recorded with six children on 22 Jun 1860).

They left Iowa during the civil war and settled in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. They were recorded there in the 1870 census without any of their daughters: the eldest, Mary, had married earlier that month (July), while little Cynthia and Theodosia both died in 1865.

Mary apparently left Samuel in the 1870's and emigrated to California while he remained in Nebraska. Aged 58 in the 1880 census he was recorded in lodgings in West Omaha, occupation "at times herd stock."

Having purchased land for $10 as a homesteader, his last move was to Colorado where the state census recorded him in Pueblo County on 01 Jun 1885. He died there in September 1889.
