In 1892, William and his siblings were orphaned when his parents both died of tuberculosis within six months of each other. George and Elizabeth were taken in by relatives; however, William went to live with Conrad and Maria Bentler who lived on the farm next to the Walters.
Conrad Bentler (Memorial # 37121298)died in 1896. William is listed as living with the Bentlers in the 1900 census and remained until Maria (Memorial #37121334) died in 1906 when the farm was sold. Although raised as her son, Theodore was not listed as a legal heir so he sued for and won a judgement of $3000 from Maria's estate.
After that, he made his way to Cincinnati where he found work as an insurance agent. On 8 Jun 1910, he married Anna Brueggemann (1885-1974) at St. Francis Seraph Catholic Church. They made their home at 759 E. McMillan St. in Cincinnati.
William and Anna became parents of a daughter, Hilda Anna Maria, born 25 Mar 1911. Their joy would be short-lived when baby Hilda died nine months later on 3 Jan 1912 from meningitis. Anna suffered a double tragedy when William contracted pulmonary tuberculosis and died in August of the same year. He is buried at St. Mary Cemetery near his baby daughter.
His remaining family lost contact with him and had no idea of whatever became of William. It wasn't until a descendant of one of his siblings happened upon his name at Ancestry that a connection was made with the Bentler family and his fate became known.
