Martha Gladys Howell Nelson was
born on July 10, 1897 on her parents
farm three miles northeast of Aurelia in
Afton Township, the daughter of John J.
and Margaret Cottingham Howell.
Martha attended rural school in Afton
Township through seventh grade and
then attended school in Aurelia graduating
in 1915. She also attended one year
at Iowa State College. On Nov. 3, 1917
she was united in marriage to Archie
Richard Nelson, who was an attorney in
Cherokee and later became a Judge. To
this union one son, William Howell
Nelson was born. Martha was a devoted
wife and mother and was a member of
the Methodist Church. She was also
active in P.E.O. serving as President,
Secretary and Treasurer, and in Order of
the Eastern Star serving as Worthy Matron.
Martha became a resident at the
Sunset Knoll Retirement Home in
Aurelia in July of 1981, where she died
on Sunday, Jan. 16, 1994.
Preceding Martha in death were her
parents; husband, Judge Archie Nelson
on Feb. 4, 1988; two sisters, Verna
Howell Lockin and Margaret Howell
Scott and two brothers, Ray C. Howell
and Harry B. Howell.
