Mary Josephine Hovan, 97,passed away on Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, in St. James Healthcare.

Mary was born at 241 Williams St., in Walkerville, on Sept. 6, 1915. Except for a few years she lived at that address as a lifelong resident of north Walkerville. She was the youngest of eight children, along with twin brother, Joe, born to Peter and Katherine (Barich) Medvit, who immigrated from Sinji Vrh, which is now in Solvenia. She attended Sherman School in Walkerville, Washington Junior High and Butte High School in Butte. One of her fond memories of growing up was playing on a Walkerville women's baseball team

She was a dedicated mother and a favorite aunt of many nieces and nephews. Mary and her large garden were well known in Walkerville and beyond. She looked forward each year to sharing her lettuce, carrots, cabbage, etc., with family, friends and neighbors. She was a very good cook and enjoyed preparing and serving meals, especially pasties, made with her famous Mary Hovan dough and ingredients finely cut by hand. Mary loved visiting and catching up with friends and family. She especially delighted in family reunions and the annual "Apple Squeezins" in Monitor, Wash., which itself was a mini-family reunion.

Mary married Andrew L. (Andy) Hovan Oct. 21, 1940, at St. Lawrence Church in Walkerville. They were blessed with eight children whom they raised just north of the Alice Mine-Alice Pit in one of the first houses in north Walkerville, which her parents bought in about 1909.

Mary is survived by sons, Andrew of Spokane, Wash., Paul (Judy) of Ennis, Fran (Leona) of Helena, Mike (Terry) of Butte, Mart (Meri) of North Las Vegas; daughter, Kathy Andrews (Steve); and sisters-in-law, Olga Medvit and Camilla Hovan. Mary's legacy also includes 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
