BENNINGTON - John Henry "Bud" Briggs, 89, a longtime resident of Bennington and North Bennington, died Oct. 25, 2012, at the Centers for Living and Rehabilitation, following a long illness.

He was born in Bennington on Jan. 20, 1923, the son of Louis and Jennie (Bent) Briggs, and the youngest of 10 children.

His parents owned the Briggs Farm on Middle Pownal Road. At a young age, he delivered milk with horses and wagon around Bennington with his father.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII, and served with the 36th Infantry Division in Italy and Germany, for which he was awarded the Bronze Star.

Following the service, he married Sue Underhill. They were married for 64 years.

He came home from the war and worked as a carpenter before going to work at the Hall Farm in North Bennington in 1949. When the Hall Farm closed, he worked for the Park-McCullough House as a caretaker. He remained in their employ until he retired at the age of 85, when he left to care for his wife in her final days. The grounds and gardens of the Park-McCullough House were a special undertaking for him, and he took great care in making them beautiful for all to enjoy.

He enjoyed hunting at a camp in Bear Town, and looked forward to deer season. He was successful almost every year, his last buck being taken in 2008. He was also an avid motorcycle rider and continued to ride into his late 70s.

Survivors include two sons, Gary J. Briggs of Pownal, and John W. Briggs of Eagle Bridge, N.Y.; a daughter Linda Briggs-Menz of Boca Raton, Fla.; 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, siblings, and a grandson, John W. Courtney.

There will be a service to celebrate his life on Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2012, at 11 a.m. Friends may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. A time for visiting will follow the services as well.

A private burial will take place at the convenience of the family in Grandview Cemetery in North Bennington.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Park-McCullough House through the Mahar and Son Funeral Home. 628 Main St., Bennington, VT 05201.
