Lost his father and became head of the family working for his uncle until Civil War when he signed up with the Confederate navy. Was serving as paymaster aboard vessel Florida until its capture, exiled in England till war was over, where he married his hometown sweetheart, then returned to Norfolk where at age thirty-three (33) he became president of Citizen's National Bank. Served the community well till death.
