In the passing away of William T. Kelso, Fremont Township mourns the loss of its oldest native son. Mr. Kelso's parents were the real old pioneers of Johnson County and Fremont Township. They came from West Virginia to Indiana where they joined with several other families and drove to Iowa with their ox teams in the spring of 1838, landing here on the 6th of May.

William was born on December 17, 1839 on the old Kelso homestead now owned by James Lukavsky where his father located on a 160 acre farm, then government land, and here he built a log cabin where they made their homes as long as they lived. William made Fremont Township his home all his life with the exception of about three years in the early sixties when he drove through to California with a horse team, coming back in the year 1865 on boat from San Francisco to New York and from there by railroad. He is the last one of the Kelso family. His health had been failing for some two or three years.

He always took a great interest in the Old Settler’s Picnics at River Junction and when he was quite poorly last year he said that he thought this would be his last one, but he was able to be with us a part of the day this year and had his picture taken for the last time with the old settlers and old time friends of which he had many.

William T. Kelso was born in Fremont Township, Johnson County Iowa December 17, 1839 and passed away at his home in Lone Tree September 20, 1925 at the age of 85 years, 9 months and 3 days. On October 10, 1866 he was married to Mary Annettie Salisbury of Fremont Township. To this union wore born two children, Katie Wallace born July 29, 1867 died December 1, 1872 at the age of 5 years, 4 months and 3 days, and Mary Adella.

Mrs. Kelso passed away at her home in Lone Tree May 6th, 1823 (1923) at the age of 8I years, 7 months and 10 days. Mr. Kelso leaves to mourn his death, one daughter Mary Adella, now Mrs. Robert McNutt and one granddaughter, Mary Robanette McNutt of Nucla, Colorado and several nephews and nieces and a host of friends.

The Reporter editor extends sympathy to the remaining relatives. So passes the last of one of the earliest families of this community. To them belong much honor and respect; they were the pioneers and their work of pioneering has made possible our conveniences of today. The large number of people who gathered at the M.E. church yesterday afternoon to attend the funeral services held for this respected man is evidence of the esteem in which he was held. Rev. H I. Ludemann had charge of the service which was largely attended. Following were the pallbearers: M. J. Harty, George Magruder, James Magruder. J. D. Musser, E. D. Porter and Ling Reppert.
