Jacob Edwards was born in Ohio on May 8, 1854 to Thomas J. Edwards and Susan Hogue. His mother, Susan, daughter of Wilson Hogue, died while her husband was serving in the Union Army. Jacob and his brother Thomas stayed with neighbors, the Hellers and the Johnsons, until their father‘s return. Their father remarried after the Civil War and had several other children.

Jacob married Amy Sanders, daughter of John & Elizabeth Hanni Sanders on August 16, 1877. He and John Sanders, Amy's father, were great friends

The Edwards farmed land in Mill Township although they lived in Rush Township. In 1908, Amy Sanders Edwards is listed as an owner of 40 acres of land directly south of Rock School. Jacob inherited additional property from his father In 1913. At the time of Jacob's death in 1918, they lived in Uhrichsville, Ohio. By 1920, Amy moved to New Philadelphia, Ohio.
