Lemuel Holsted, Jr. born 31 Mar 1818 in St Francois County , MO. He was the son of Lemuel Holsted Sr and Nancy Burnham Holsted. He appears as single in the 1840 Searcy County census. He married Maranda Adams, probably late 1840 since their first child was born Sep 1841.

Lemuel was a Confederate Scout and was killed 20 February 1865 by Federal troops. Lemuel was a blacksmith and apparently was working in his shop at home on Bear Creek when the Federal troops showed up. He saw them coming and took off on foot across the fields and woods but the troops circled around and he was unable to escape. Both Maranda’s pension application and military records verify he was killed by Federal troops. Because all the men were off at war, the women took the boards off an old wagon box and made a casket for him.
