Born in the Bright Shade area of Clay County Kentucky to Edith Smith (1879 – 1928) and Benjamin Franklin Wombles (1884 – 1956) who were both born in the same area. Bessi moved with her family in the 1920s to Vermilion County, Illinois.
On June 26, 1926, she married Burt R. Phillips born Paris, IL (son of George Washington and Rosa Anna Phillips born Indiana). They raised five children in the Danville, Illinois area:
1. Nellie May Ricketts-Riggle 1930 – 2005 buried Westville, IL
2. Oliver Phillips 1931 – 1997 buried Danville, IL
3. Mary Jane Sands Ault Boyd 1936 -
4. Rosalie Collom 1939 -
5. Joann Sims 1943 – 2010 buried Homosassa, FL
In 1977, at age 69, Bessie died in Danville. Bert lived until 1988 when he died at age 85. Bessie Wombles with her husband Bert Phillips are buried in Greenview Cemetery in nearby rural Fairmount, Illinois. Both their grave locations are known, but are unmarked graves at this time. Her mother Edith Smith Wombles, who died when Bessie was 20, is buried close by in the GAR Cemetery in Homer, where the Wombles family first lived when they moved to Illinois. Her father Ben Wombles is buried in the Edgar Cemetery in Paris, Illinois with his second wife Emma Staley (who was a niece of Bert's mother).
