Dan was the son of Lester and Ellen(Peterson)Barbee. His parents had moved to the Yakima Valley in 1905 from Red Oak, Iowa. They started a 20 acre apple orchard, where Dan was born and raised. As a young boy he worked on the farm, picking and driving the fruit to market.

Dan was a graduate with the 1932 class of Toppenish High School. He then attended Yakima Valley Community College. Dan worked at Prosser Trucking, later starting Barbee Trucking. During WWII, he hauled goods for the army. He then expanded his business hauling between Canada and Mexico. Later he established Barbee Produce in Cornelius, which started with cranberries and strawberries and later developed into a thriving asparagus business.

He was president of Prosser Packers for several years. He was a supplier to a number of large processors, including Del Monte, Green Giant, and Bird's Eye in Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. Dan was known to most people as "Mr. Asparagus."

He belonged to the Elks Lodge and was a member of the Eagles Aerie. He was also a life member of the Shriner of the Scottish Rite's of Toppenish-Meridian Lake, No.178.

Dan is survived by his wife, Ardra Barbee, two sons, David Barbee and Joel Bond; two step-children, Nikki Pelley and Mark Steneide, two grandchildren, Abby and Ruth Barbee; two nieces, Virginia Obert and Judy LaCasse and four step-grandchildren, Shannon and Jesse Pelley, Kyle and Kayla Steneide.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Les Barbee.
