Samuel was the 4th of 6 sons born to Sarah Colvin and William Bates. When he was a young boy, Samuel lived with his family in Edmonston, Otsego New York. By 1890 the family was living in Hiram, Portage, Ohio. There, in 1824, Samuel married Elizabeth Ann Young. They had the following children:
1. Erastus 1826-1895 + Nancy A 1828-1862 + Catherine Vaughan 1839-1911
2. George 1828 - not sure he's Samuel's son, but he's buried in same area
3. Samuel Sterling 1836-1909 + Julia Cramer 1839-1915
4. Lydia 1842-1845
Samuel appears to have been a farmer. He died at age 45.
