Sylvanus Timotheus Crater was the fifth of nine known children of Jacob Greter/Crater (1801-1890) and his first wife, Sarah Wesner/ Weisner (1805-c1843), who married 09 Dec 1823 at Salem, Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. After Sarah died Jacob married three more times and had an additional six children. It is not known where Sarah is buried.

Sylvanus married Martha Emily (went by Emily) Campbell (1837-1886) in c1855 at presumably Iredell County, North Carolina. Sylvanus and Emily were the parents of nine known children, namely:

1. John Williamson Crater (1856-1926)
2. Delia Ann Crater Trivette (1858-1933)
3. Tabitha Jane Crater Mullis (1861-1928)
4. Augustus Franklin Crater (1865-1952)
5. Ida Henrietta Crater Mullis (1868-1955)
6. Benjamin Weisner Crater (1870-1943)
7. Susan Arminda Crater Mullis (1872-1950)
8. Sarah Emily Crater Tutterow (1874-1892)
9. Mary Ellen Crater Finley (1881-1966)
