Fred Austin

FULTON – Fred Morgan Austin, 79, died Thursday, Oct. 25, 2012, at his residence north of Smithville after an extended illness. He was born Aug. 14, 1933, in Verona to Talmadge and Elna "Dutch" Morgan Austin. He served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Alaska during the post-Korean War time. He attended Itawamba Community College and graduated from Mississippi State, earning a degree in accounting. He played baseball with ICC and with his U.S. Army team. He spent his working career with Anheuser-Busch in Tampa, Fla., where he was a production supervisor, and then in the construction business after retiring. He was a member of Smithville United Methodist Church. He was a rabid Mississippi State bulldog fan, traveler, a free spirit and great adventurer, a practical jokester, and loved life and living every day.

A celebration of life service will be at 11 a.m. today in Tupelo Chapel of Holland Funeral Directors with the Rev. Charles Coggins officiating and Jack Ware delivering the eulogy. Private burial will follow in Andrews Chapel Cemetery at Mooreville. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time today at Holland-Tupelo Chapel.

He is survived by two sons, Freddie Austin and Lewis Austin of Tampa, Fla.; a granddaughter, Morgan Austin of Tampa, Fla.; his sister, Wanda Allen of Tupelo; and a lifelong friend and companion, Shirley Cooper of Fulton and Mooreville.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Lawrence Elward Austin.

Pallbearers will be Marvin Swain, Steve Ballard II, James "Boy" Drake, Roy Grafe, Noland Bennett and Jack Ware. Honorary pallbearers will be Mrs. Cooper's Andrews Chapel Sunday School Class and her Sunday school Class at Smithville United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Smithville United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 93, Smithville, MS 38870.
