Businessman and Banker

Percy Rivington Pyne was born in
England to Thomas and Anna Rivington Pyne. He attended Christ’s Hospital boarding school in West Sussex. He came to the U.S. in 1835 and joined the company of Moses Taylor and Co. as a clerk in 1836. He married Moses Taylor's
oldest daughter, Albertina Shelton Taylor (1833-1900), in 1855. They had children Moses Taylor Pyne (1855-1921), married Margaretta Stockton; Percy Rivington Pyne Jr. (1857-1959), married Maud Howland; and Albertina Taylor Pyne
(1859-1918), married Archibald Douglas Russell.

Moses Taylor & Co. specialized in the importation and sale of sugar, focusing on the Cuban trade. Pyne managed the sugar business while Moses Taylor expanded the company into
finance, iron, coal and railroads. Pyne became a partner of Moses Taylor & Co. in 1842. In 1865, Moses Taylor founded National City Bank of New York, and Pyne succeeded Taylor as President of the bank upon Taylor’s death in 1882.

Percy R. Pyne became an incorporator of the Central Trust Company with Martin Bates, Charles H.P. Babcock, Samuel D. Babcock and William Henry Appleton. He was a
vice President of the Delaware, Lackawana and Western Railroad with William E. Dodge, William H. Appleton and William Truesdale acting as managers. He was a
director of the Farmers' Loan and Trust Company, the Chicago and Northwestern Railway Company, the Western Union Telegraph Company, and several other companies. He was Vice President of St. Luke's Hospital, and a trustee of the
Bellevue Medical School.

Upon the death of Percy R. Pyne, his son Percy R. Pyne Jr. directed the bank. The bank exists today as Citibank, an international financial concern. His son Moses Taylor Pyne dedicated himself to the interests of his alma mater, Princeton University, and as a member of the Board of Trustees became a major benefactor of that institution.

The Pynes had a townhouse at 25 East 22nd Street, that was given to them by Moses Taylor as a wedding gift. In 1863 they bought “Alderbrook”, located in the estate section of
Riverdale at 4715 Independence Avenue, as a country house for the family. Alderbrook remained within the Pyne family until 1921.

Percy R. Pyne was a founding vestryman of Christ Church in Riverdale. He commissioned the large stained glass window representing the Supper at Emmaus in the north transept
over the door to the parish hall in 1883 in memory of his mother Anna Rivington (1780-1858). It was made by the French firm of Eugene Stanislas Oudinot and Luc-Oliver Merson.

Percy Rivington Pyne died on February 14, 1895 while
wintering in Rome. He is buried in Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn NY in a family crypt with his wife Albertina Taylor and his mother Anna Rivington (died 1858). His father Thomas Pyne (died 1851) is buried in Green-Wood in a separate location.
