Born in Appomattox County, on December 15, 1931, he was a son of the late Lena Burks and John William Childress Sr. He was a US Army Veteran of the Korean War, a member of New Beginnings Ministry, a wood cutter, and a past member of Greenway Hunt Club.
In addition to his wife he is survived by two sons, Paul Leroy (Duck) Cyrus, Jr. and wife, Teresa and Rev. Jerry Allen (Stalk) Childress and wife, Sue all of Appomattox; three grandchildren, Stacey Cyrus, Christy Cyrus, and Jeremie Childress; two great grandchildren, Coby and Camden Taylor; and two brothers, Clifford (Buck) Childress of Kane, PA and Calvin Childress of Appomattox. He was preceded in death by a brother, William Childress and four sisters, Ester C. McCormick, Annabelle C. Bryant, Virginia C. Bryant and Elizabeth Moore. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 27, 2012 at Robinson Funeral Home by the Rev. Harold Powers, Rev. Jerry Childress, and Billy Moore. Burial will follow in the Burks Family Cemetery with military rites accorded by American Legion Post #104 and VFW #9855 combined honor guard. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today, Friday, Oct. 26, from 7-8:30 p.m. and other times at the home of Jerry and Sue Childress, 537 Richwood Estates Rd.
