Businessman, farmer, cattle man. Born in Missouri and farmed in Pike County and in N. Missouri. Fell in love with the South West on hunting trips in the early 1900s. After his first wife, Ada Payne died, he married the young Helen Jo Unsell. Virgil was educated at Kirksville business college. He brought his family to Phoenix, a progressive and burgeoning community, in the 1920s, every winter, eventually making their home in the central city. He was taciturn, loved cats, smoked a pipe, and enjoyed playing bridge and his grandchildren.
