George E. Ackert, a lifelong New Paltz resident and former village trustee, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Kingston Hospital. He was 89. During WWII, he served in the U.S. Army with the 102 Engineer Treadway Bridge Co.
Mr. Ackert was the postmaster for New Paltz from 1959 to 1963. He was also assistant Ulster County treasurer from 1963 to 1076, working in Kingston. In addition he owned the Shell Gas Station on Main Street in New Paltz for 14 years.
He was a member of the Reformed Church of New Paltz, the Huguenot Historical Society and the American Legion. He was also a former member of the Paltz Club. Mr. Ackert was a lifetime member of the New Paltz Fire Department, having joined in 1928. He was chief from 1941 until entering the Army during World War II. Upon his return, he was once again fire chief and later became president of the department. He was a trustee for the Village of New Paltz from 1950 to 1952 and from 1968 to 1981. He was acting mayor in 1952, and helped start the Little League in 1950.
For many years, Mr. Ackert spent the winters at his home in Lake Fairways, North Fort Myers, Fla. He was born Jan 18, 1912, in New Paltz, the son of the late George and Lucy Kuff Ackert. Survivors include his wife, Marjorie "Penny" Lente Ackert, at home; two sons, G. Jeffrey of New Paltz and Jay of Louisville, KY; two granddaughters, a grandson and a great-grandson.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Copeland Funeral home, Inc., 162 South Putt Corners Road, New Paltz. Burial will be in New Paltz Rural Cemetery.
