Jesse Oscar "J.O." Weaver, a former publisher of The Steele Enterprise, died Sunday, September 30, 1984, at his home in Chiriguelo, Amambay, Paraguay.
Mr. Weaver died of lung cancer after an illness of several months. He had been in San Diego and Memphis for treatment this summer and in Florida on business but had returned to Paraguay just days before he died.
In the mid-1950's Weaver was postmaster in Steele for two years, and publisher of The Steele Enterprise for one year. He left those positions to go to Phoenix, Ariz., to study at the American Institute for Foreign Trade, after which he and the family lived in Mexico for a while to come more fluent in the Spanish language.
They moved to Paraguay in 1959 where Mr. Weaver managed farm interests for Jack Hutchison of Caruthersville. From raising coffee and managing land for others, Mr. Weaver went on to buy more than 25,000 acress of farm, ranch and timber land.
He cleared and developed land for row crops, rice and cattle, and established a timber-harvest and export business.
J.O. was born in Steele August 28, 1925, the son of Frank J. and Bertha Hastings Weaver.
He was married to Harriett Evers of Metropolis, Ill., in 1947. They had seven children, one of whom, Paul, died at birth.
A veteran of World War II, Weaver was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. He attended schools locally and in Illinois, receiving his degree from the university there.
In Steele, Mr. Weaver was in the service station, restaurant, and trucking business before becoming postmaster and publisher. He was active in civic work in Steele, being instrumental in developing the City Park.
Funeral services were held October 1, 1984, on the family farm and was * buried there in a location chosen by Mr. Weaver for a family cemetery.
Mr. Weaver leaves his wife, Harriett, of the home;
Two sons: Frank Luther Weaver and Joseph Evers Weaver of Chiriguelo;
Four daughters: Sharon Brizuela of Asuncion, Paraguay; Leni Fernandez of near Pedro Juan Caballero, Paraguay; Mary Nelle Weaver of San Diego, Calif.; and Jessica Lucille (Lucy) Weaver Moreno of near Belleville, Ill.;
His mother, Mrs. Rupert Pritchard, of Steele; and
eight gradchildren.

A memorial service for Jesse O. Weaver, will be conducted Sunday, October 21, 1984 at the First United Methodist Church in Metropolis, Ill. Mr. Weaver died in Paraguay September 30. Dr. Joseph C. Evers, pastor of the United Methodist Church in Bunker Hill, Ill., will conduct the service. Dr. Evers is a brother of Harriett (Mrs. J.O.) Weaver.
Mrs. Weaver is a native of Metropolis and she and her late husband have friends and relatives in that area. They are invited to the service as are relatives and friends in this area.
