Mrs. Virginia Culp Deen of Newport, Arkansas, formerly of Whiteville, Tenn., departed this life Friday, April 20, 2007, at Newport at the age of 97.

She was born Dec. 30, 1909, in Obion, Tenn., the daughter of Thomas Jefferson and Catherine Eleanor Tonnemacher Culp.

Mrs. Deen was the valedictorian of the Obion High School Class of 1927 and a 1929 graduate of the University of Tennessee Junior College in Martin, Tenn. She wed Mr. Webb Lowery Deen on May 26, 1929.

Mrs. Deen was a self-employed merchant. She worked alongside her husband at Webb Deen and Company in Whiteville and co-managed the family farming operation.

She was a lifelong devoted member of First United Methodist Church and played the piano and organ for 80 years. Methodist churches blessed by her unique style were Obion, Martin, Whiteville and Tuckerman. She also worshipped at Christ United Methodist Church in Memphis for 15 years. Music was her passion and she was a lifelong student of music. In 1981, she performed at the White House with the Peabody Choral and Drama Group of Memphis.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Webb Deen; and one daughter, Marilyn Virginia (Deen) Penix.

She is survived by her son-in-law, Robert Lindley Penix of Tuckerman; a brother, Thomas Jefferson Culp of Whiteville; two grandchildren, Mary Forrest Penix Winston and husband David, and Robert Deen Penix and wife Kristine, all of Tuckerman; four great-grandchildren, Melinda Forrest Winston Smith, David Webb Winston, Robert Anderson Penix and Marilyn Leigh Winston; two great-great-grandchildren, Madison Virginia Smith and Harrison Allen Smith; a niece, Kerry Elizabeth Culp; and special friend, Linda Frost.

Committal services were in Melrose Cemetery at Whiteville. Memorial services were in First United Methodist Church of Tuckerman. Arrangements: Jackson's Newport Funeral Home.
