NORMAL- Leola E. "Toly" Wain, 96, of Monmouth died at 4:15 a.m. Thursday (May 23, 2002) at McLean County Nursing Home, Normal. Her funeral mass will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Episcopal Church, Monmouth. Burial will be in
Monmouth Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Turnbull Funeral Home, Monmouth, with "Broken Wand Services" at 7 p.m. Memorials may be made to Trinity Episcopal Church, Monmouth. She was born July 21, 1905, in Logan County, the daughter of Simon Peter and Elva M. Hobbs Tobias. She married Jack E. Wain March 3, 1928, in Galesburg Knox Co IL. He died April 22, 1976. Surviving are one brother, John M. (Sylvia) Tobias, Carlock; one sister, Dorothy F. Smith, Mendota; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and one brother. Leola was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Monmouth. She taught rural school for seven years west of Bloomington. She was educated in Logan County schools and graduated from University High School in 1923. For more than 20 years, she assisted "LaWain" in their Magic performance throughout the United States and Canada. They performed magic and Punch and Judy shows in area schools, homecomings and on tour of the Southern States in 1938. "Toly" also continued in the magic supply business LaWains House of Magic in Monmouth, at her home at 522 S. 5th St., for more than 25 years. They were professional magicians, at one time touring the US. In Monmouth, they were friends of Maud, Charles Albert, and William Mozart Nicol. The latter two were known as "Professor Von Arx"/"Chasan" and "The Great Nicola", world renowned magicians (also buried at Monmouth
cemetery). Jack and his wife operated "LaWain's House of Magic" from Monmouth, selling magic items mail order around the world. They just recently made wide-spread news again. In 1974, they sold one of Houdini's more famous props to a minister down south. The minister demonstrated it to various church groups for exactly 40 years, before deciding it was time for him to retire, and put it up for sale. At first, no one believed it actually belonged to Houdini, but then authenticated it. You can easily find this with a Google search, and other mentions of "LaWain's House of Magic".
