He was a graduate of Lineville College and Princeton University. He was a professor of Mathematics and head of the Dept. of Mathematics at the University of Illinois for 14 years before becoming the Dean of the Graduate School there. He published hundreds of articles on mathematical, philosophical, and scientific subjects, and authored several volumes on these subjects. some of his works have been republished in French translations.
