Edith Clevenger Thompson, passed away Friday, December 24, 2010, at her home following an illness of several months. Mrs. Thompson was very active in local Republican politics for many years serving on the Cocke County Republican Executive Committee as well as a member of the Republican Women of Cocke County. She was made an "Honorary Tennessee Colonel" by former Governor Winfield Dunn. In addition to her activities in local politics, Mrs. Thompson served as a member of the Cocke County School Board, the Cocke County Election Commission, as Co-Chair of the Cocke County Chapter of the American Heart Association, and as a member of the ETHA (East Tennessee Human Resource Agency). During WWII she worked at the Oak Ridge Laboratories participating in the Manhattan Project that helped bring the end of WWII. She has retired from Bush Brothers of Dandridge, Tennessee.

She is survived by her husband L.A. (Tommy) Thompson; son Steve Thompson; daughter Jan Russell and husband Ledford; grandchildren: Stephen Thompson and wife Jennifer, Jonathan Thompson and wife Lori, Lauren Brock and husband T.J., Brooklyn Russell, Brittni Swires and husband Clint; great grandchildren: Madison Thompson, Cole Thompson and Maggie Thompson; and special family friends: Jennifer Stone, Robert Larkin, Kim Cain, Nancy Clark.

Funeral service will be 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 28, 2010 at the Episcopal Church of the Annunciation, 304 Cosby Highway, Newport, TN.

Family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 at the Episcopal Church of the Annunciation prior to the funeral.

Burial will be at Union Cemetery at 11:00 on Wednesday, December 29, 2010.

In lieu of flowers memorials/gifts may be made to the Bread Basket, 124 Murray Drive, Newport TN 37821
