Mrs. Mary Acheson, wife of J. W. Acheson, closed her earthly pilgrimage Tuesday night about 9:30 after a brave fight against pneumonia.
Many were the anxious friends who were waiting and hoping for several days that this "Clara Barton" of Effingham might be spared to still spread her sunlight among us, but on account of a weak heart it could not be so and she sweetly passed away conscious of her approaching end. The funeral services were held at the Methodist church yesterday afternoon at 2 o'clock conducted by her pastor Rev. J. B. Mackenzie. This death is not only a hard blow to the family, but is keenly felt by the entire community. Mrs. Acheson was know far and near, having lived in Atchison county for almost fifty years. She was one of those choice women whose whole life was spent in helping those who were in need of help. She never wearied of doing good and wherever there was sickness or trouble Mrs. Acheson was among the first to offer her help, many times assisting others at a great cost and sacrifice as well as endangering her own life, but it was all done in the name of Christ with no thought of her own welfare. Many people will long remember her works of love and miss her kindly ministrations. She was engaged in this work of "Mercy and Help" when she contracted pneumonia which finally ended her life. Mary Elizabeth High was born in Pennsylvania May 2, 1862. She moved to Atchison county, Kans., when she was seven years of age and had resided within ten miles of Effingham all these years, spending the greater part of her time in the country. About five years ago Mrs. Acheson's father lost his aged companion and Mrs. Acheson and her husband moved to town to care for the father. none could have done it better or perhaps as well as Mary Acheson. She was married to Wm. Acheson, May 3, 1882 at Valley Falls, Kans. To them were born six children, three of whom are still living. The living children are Mrs. Andrew Azlein of Coin, Iowa, Mrs. Henry Myers and Raymond Acheson of Effingham. Four grandchildren with the husband and children mourn the loss of a blessed mother and companion Mrs. Acheson united with the Methodist church about twenty-five years ago and has lived out her profession in a practicle way. One characteristic of her live was consistency. She had no place for "shams." Open hearted, plain spoken, true to he convictions, yet kind, and at all time s trusting in her Heavenly Father.
